Welcome To The Dollhouse (1995)

While it wasn’t New Jersey native Todd Solondz’s debut as a director, Welcome To The Dollhouse (1995) was his break-out film, winning a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival that year. Heather Matarazzo stars as awkward high school student Dawn Wiener, cruelly nick-named “Wiener-dog” by her classmates and tormented by the school bully, Brandon (Brendon Sexton III). All she wants is to be popular, and she has a crush on the lead singer (Eric Mabius) of her brother’s garage band. A comic-of-age comedy that is both bitingly funny and acidly dark, but also holds out sincere empathy for the emotional turmoil of adolescence and high school. Solondz would continue to cement his reputation as a controversial auteur with Happiness (1998) and Storytelling (2001) and brought back the character of Dawn Wiener – played this time by Greta Gerwig – in Wiener-Dog (2016).
