Escape From The Bronx (1983)

Escape From The Bronx (1983; aka Bronx Warriors 2 aka Escape 2000) is the sequel to 1990: The Bronx Warriors, which was an entertaining Italian B-movie and (shameless) rip off of Escape From New York and The Warrriors. Here, the punk criminal hero of the first movie returns – Trash (Mark Gregory) who is as tall as a Clydesdale horse but walks with the awkward grace of a new born baby colt, and looks like a cross between Paul Stanley and any member of The Strokes. The plot: corporate greed wants to turf out and gentrify the Bronx, which means we get to see guys in silver space suits shoot flame throwers at hapless tenets. So it’s up to Trash and his gang of outlaws to fight for their turf, which includes the help of master thief Strike (Giancarlo Prete who was in The New Barbarians and gives off a Paul Reiser vibe) and the overacting of Antonio Sabato Snr as a warlord leader. It’s a lot of Italians running around in punk denim gear shooting soldiers with the occasional slow motion death and shotguns firing at cars which explode instantly upon contact. The ever reliable Henry Silva plays the bad guy Wangler (best moment when he snarls at an underling for getting his coffee order wrong: “I hate sugar in my coffee. It makes me go CRAZY!”). It’s not as good as The Bronx Warriors but it’s okay for fans of trashy Italian genre fare. Directed by Enzo G. Castellari and also featured a cool synth score by Walter Rizatti. Available to stream on Tubi, probably a decent bootleg on YouTube out there too.
