Thrashin’ (1986)

A classic example of the 1980s teen sports movie, Thrashin’ (1986) is like a mix between The Karate Kid or The Lost Boys but swap out the karate or vampirism for skateboarding. A young, hunky Josh Brolin plays Corey, a thrasher from the Valley whose dreams of winning the downhill tournament “LA Massacre” come under fire by falling in love with the sister (Pamela Gidley) of skate punk terror named Monk and his gang The Daggers. Many sequences of the actors’ skate doubles doing slick moves and there’s even a scene where the Red Hot Chilli Peppers play live in an underground club (though which icon of teen culture sings the opening credits song? Meatloaf!). This was silly and entertaining right up to the classic 80s ending where all of our hero’s dilemmas are solved in quick succession during a crowd scene. Also features a young Sherilyn Fenn as a skate punker moll.
