Woke up early one morning and decided to watch Against All Odds (1984) on Netflix and now which song do I have stuck in my head? Can’t believe they only use the Phil Collins song (written for the movie) over the closing credits and not in every romantic montage of which there are a few (such restraint!). A 1980s remake of a 1940s noir (Out Of The Past), which trades in the shadowy nihilism for a sun-soaked romantic drama as injured football player (Jeff Bridges, pre-Dude hunk mode) is paid by his old friend (James Woods) to find his girlfriend that stabbed him and took his money (Rachel Ward). Bridges and Ward make for an alluring pairing and there’s some shading in the archetypes – the sap is an innocent, the femme fatale maybe not that fatal. Old Hollywood pros like Jane Greer and Richard Widmark are in the mix, and even Kid Creole and The Coconuts turn up to do a song. A little bit long but enough intrigue and chemistry between the attractive leads to keep it compelling.
