If a movie could only be judged on its Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack and its opening typeface, Thief Of Hearts (1984) would be a classic. However it is one Bruckheimer/Simpson production that isn’t really remembered, maybe because it is a soapy and trashy (wait, what Bruckheimer/Simpson production isn’t?). It’s about a hunky thief played by Scarface’s Steven Bauer who robs a wealthy couple’s home, accidentally steals the wife’s secret journals with her hidden desires, and he falls in love reading them!! It’s like American Gigolo meets Thief meets Mills and Boon. My favourite scene is when the wife (Barbara Williams) and the thief are on a boat, and she is all aflame watching Bauer put sun tan oil on his hairy chest. David Caruso also turns up as the thief’s coked up partner chewing the scenery. The synth score and eighties tunes are great.
