Mohawk (2017) is a low budget 90-minute historical-drama-action-horror-thriller set in America during the War of 1812. Two members of the Mohawk tribe – Okwaho (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Calvin Two-Rivers (Justin Rain) – and their British ally (Eamon Ferren, the only recognisable face here from Twin Peaks: The Return) try to push for the Mohawk tribe who remain neutral to join the fight against the American soldiers. When one of them takes matters into their own hands, they become hunted by a squad of US troops led by the intense Holt (Ezra Buzzington). I thought this was a very effective thriller with very grisly violence, escalating to the horror genre in its climactic mythical showdown. Even though it’s a bunch of unknown actors running around in the woods in costume on the cheap, there’s some interesting characterisation and varied style to the camerawork, all compounded by the pulsating synth score of Wojciech Golczewski. Available to watch on Netflix; I dug it.
