Just One Of The Guys (1985)

Another movie poster I remember seeing in video stores, Just One Of The Guys (1985) is an eighties teen movie with a high concept twist: Terri (Joyce Hyser) wants to be a journalist and is passed over for a summer internship at a newspaper by her teacher’s sexism, so she decides to go undercover as a “he” at another school (called Sturgess-Wilder School, a tribute to the great screwball comedy masters of old?) to prove she has a nose for news (as her comic relief brother says “What are you, Tootsie? Yentl??”). As described by a young Sherilyn Fenn (who develops a crush on this new kid), this new “boy” dresses like Elvis Costello and talks like Ralph Macchio – it’s all pretty broad and silly. Speaking of Macchio, William Zabka who played the jock bully in The Karate Kid also plays a jock bully in this. Directed by Lisa Gottlieb and co-scripted by Jeff Franklin, the creator of Full House, which gives you a sense of what level the jokes are on in this, and this is a very eighties teen comedy with snooty college guys, nerds who feed reptiles and everyone worrying about who they’re going to take to the prom, and it’s a strange PG rated mix of family friendly and sexualised overtones. Overall, I found it entertaining, and Hyser is charming in the lead. Soundtrack does feature Shalamar, Midnight Star, Dwight Tilley and Ronnie Spector.
