The Tomb Of Ligeia (1964)

Once more into the breach, dear friends, with a first time viewing of a title from the Vincent Price Collection Blu-ray Boxset. The Tomb Of Ligeia (1964) is another Edgar Allan Poe adaptation directed by Roger Corman. Key difference is that it was a UK co-production and shot in England, which means better out door locations. Price plays Verden Fell who is widowed with a wife in the grave who seems to haunt him, specifically in the shape of a nasty black cat, which hampers his growing romance with a lady of distinction Rowena (Elizabeth Shepherd). Great things about this enjoyable gothic horror are the groovy shades Price wears (he has light sensitive eyes) and Shepherd’s terrific performance, conveying a headstrong, charismatic presence, even with having to sell her attraction to a very erratic, creepy Vincent Prince character. Vibrant colours in the fiery finale, and it stands as an early piece of screenwriting for legendary writer Robert Towne (of Chinatown fame). One of the more entertaining Price-Corman-Poe adaptations even if the last act is a bit of a mess.
